Black Hat USA 2015: Secret Systems

Supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems keep the world's vital systems running smoothly, until they don't, which is the only time most people become aware of these crucial embedded systems. Today's trio of Black Hat USA 2015 Trainings will carry you well beyond awareness, taking you on a deep dive into the little-known yet high-stakes world of SCADA security testing.

Assessing and Exploiting Control Systems is not your traditional SCADA security course but it's a great one. Combining a mixture of real-world and simulated exercises to offer the most realistic possible experience in a portable classroom setting, UtiliSec's Justin Searle will take you on a tour of the Smart Grid, PLCs, RTUs, smart meters, building management, manufacturing, Home Area Networks (HAN), smart appliances, substation automation, and more besides. Over four busy days you'll learn how to harness the power of SamuraiSTFU (Security Testing Framework for Utilities) to apply the formal penetration-testing methodology UtiliSec created for the U.S. Department of Energy.

In a similar vein, Attacking, Building and Defending SCADA Systems will delve into the fundamentals of SCADA security and provide you with the knowledge to safely perform penetration testing against live SCADA environments, and possibly even discover 0day flaws in some of the world's most critical systems. After covering the fundamentals, the remainder of the Training will focus on attacking industrial control systems, securing embedded ICS devices, and neat tricks like reversing SCADA RTOS firmware.

Finally, today's cars and trucks have far more going on under the hood than the comparatively simple vehicles of 40 years ago. Automotive Electrical Systems Hands-On will take you on a tour of much of this mobile tech, from basic systems control to networking to the intricacies of specific subsystems. You'll tap into diagnostics and immobilizer systems, learn about V2X infrastructure and open hack controllers, and generally learn what makes today's vehicles go. It's definitely not just gasoline.

Black Hat USA 2015 will occur at the Mandalay Bay resort in Las Vegas. It goes down August 1-6, and there's still time to lock in early-bird discounts if you register before June 6.
