A quarterly analysis by security service company Solutionary on malware threats to industries has found that healthcare is the most ransomware-targeted industry worldwide, accounting for 88% of all detections in Q2. The Security Engineering Research Team (SERT) Quarterly Threat Report for Q2 2016 also discovered that Cryptowall is the top ransomware variant detected this quarter and responsible for almost 94% of all attacks.

“Healthcare has been a target for ransomware campaigns because the industry has often paid ransom to retrieve vital customer data quickly,” explains Rob Kraus of Solutionary.

Other impacted industries include education (6%) and finance (4%), says the report. The researchers add that the top attack types of this quarter were web application (24%), malware and application-specific assaults which accounted for nearly 62%, and that Germany was the source for nearly 15% of all non-US based attacks.
