PRESS RELEASE
Washington, DC -- The global law firm Jones Day has announced the formation of its Cybersecurity, Privacy & Data Protection Practice, an area of law where the Firm has been advising clients for more than 20 years, and an area that continues to grow in importance for the Firm's clients around the world.
"Taking the logical next step of bringing our cybersecurity, privacy, and data protection capabilities together into a single, formalized practice will enable us to concentrate and coordinate most effectively our approach to client service in this field," said Steve Brogan, Managing Partner of Jones Day. "We have an exceptional group of talented and experienced lawyers throughout the Firm who will combine their varied skills and common dedication to this area of critical concern to companies to help navigate current and future clients through these data protection and privacy challenges."
In service of clients that face a growing array of domestic and international laws and regulations that apply to the collection, use, and transfer of consumer information; more aggressive enforcement by regulators and data protection authorities; and private litigation over the use of consumer information, the practice will be supported by more than 50 Jones Day lawyers from around the globe. These lawyers will advise clients on a range of compliance and preparedness issues, as well as responses related to investigations and enforcement actions, and defend against class actions. Daniel J. McLoon, a partner based in the Firm's Los Angeles Office, will lead the practice.
"Bringing our lawyers who provide these representations together into a single, multidisciplinary practice group will allow us to meet client needs more efficiently and effectively—and apply a broader spectrum of experience—to what are rapidly becoming enterprise threats—often in multiple jurisdictions—rather than localized challenges," said Mr. McLoon. "Our practice organization will closely align with the complex and multifaceted nature of the data protection and privacy issues facing businesses around the world."
Mr. McLoon has more than 30 years of experience in complex commercial litigation, and has advised multiple companies on data security and consumer privacy issues in both public and nonpublic matters. He has defended clients in disputes involving data breaches, cybersecurity investigations, products liability, contracts, and accounting issues. He has extensive trial experience, having first-chaired more than a dozen trials in state court and federal district courts throughout the country. He also has handled a variety of appellate matters in state and federal reviewing courts, including the Supreme Court of the United States.
