PRESS RELEASE

SAN FRANCISCO, CA – August 11, 2015Message Systems, the global leader in email infrastructure, today announced the release of Email Privacy Report, a reporting tool developed in partnership with Twitter that details email encryption as it is transferred between domains and ISPs. The report will provide Twitter users and public researchers with an increased understanding of the security measures taken by ISPs for email in transit and serves as an integral part of the Twitter Transparency Report for 2015, and also supports Message Systems’ best-in-breed flagship email service SparkPost.

The collaborative effort leverages Twitter’s position as one of the largest global social networks and the expertise of Message Systems, which supplies the technology through which one-quarter of global legitimate email is sent – including emails sent by Twitter, one of the world’s largest email senders. The report will provide a depth of analysis that encourages the adoption of robust email protection throughout the Internet provider community to protect user privacy in a world of frequent data breaches and constant malware threats.

“Message Systems, along with Twitter, is a member of a diverse set of messaging companies that have taken it upon themselves to protect user privacy by improving the security of the email ecosphere that connects four billion people globally,” said Message Systems President and Founder George Schlossnagle. “Twitter’s reach of hundreds of millions of people gives them a unique perspective and the ability to analyze a vast array of data that can help other companies better protect the privacy of a common set of users. We worked hand in hand to expose that data, sort it, measure it, aggregate it and provide the most comprehensive Encryption of Email in Transit report currently available on the Internet.”

To empower users in assessing their level of security, Email Privacy Report will deliver information including whether a specific domain utilizes verifiable security protocols to protect their users. Given the number of servers through which emails are sent before delivery, combined with the fact that malicious organizations are expected to deploy powerful data theft tools formerly available only to governments, today’s Internet user is entitled to a greater understanding of their risk. To that end, the report will be a permanently accessible tool on Twitter, easily tweeted out by users with the aim of widely disseminating information that concerns every citizen on the Internet. Users are also encouraged to tweet about ISPs that provide excellent security – or those that need improvement.

“Generally there is a lack of accurate and real-time info about the privacy settings of Internet communications,” said Josh Aberant, Postmaster at Twitter. “Twitter’s Email Privacy Report gives users and researchers an up-to-date accounting of email transit encryption as seen by Twitter’s ops.”

As awareness of email encryption increases through the use of Email Privacy Report, users and ISPs are encouraged to open a dialogue supporting the use of STARTTLS text encryption protocols and the establishment of industry-wide standards. The end goal is safer email communication, improved business productivity and protection against the theft of personally identifying information (PII).
