Backup My Info!, a.k.a. BUMI, has expanded platform support and added other features in the new version 10.0 of its eponymous Backup My Info! online backup and restore managed service offering.
Headquartered in New York City's financial district, and using SAS70 Type II data centers located in Canada, BUMI provides online backup and recovery-managed services -- reducing the need for a company's own IT staffing, time or expertise -- for small to midsize businesses. The company focuses on SMBs in the professional services market who have compliance and regulatory concerns, and also where growing volumes of data are creating backup window issues. BUMI can be used to perform backup and restore tasks including database backup, single installation, local storage, archiving, time-based backup, email message level backup, continuous data protection, bare metal backup and delta blocking.
BUMI uses agentless backup software from Asigra, and can be used to protect desktop, laptop and server computers. "We typically install on a server on the LAN, and can point to and protect anything on the network," says Jennifer Walzer, CEO at Backup My Info!. On remote desktops and laptops not on the company network, like those in branch offices, with sales and field service, and for teleworkers, "We'll install a lighter version of the software," says Walzer.
New features in BUMI 10.0 include:
-- Support for more versions of Windows, Mac, and Linux environments, including Windows 2008 Standard & Enterprise x86/x64 SP2; Windows 2008 R2 Standard & Enterprise x64; Windows 2008 Standard SBS x64 SP2; Windows 7 Ultimate, Professional and Enterprise x86/x64; Windows VISTA Home Basic, Home Premium, Ultimate, Enterprise, Business x86/x64 SP2 English; Red Hat 4 U8 x86/x64; Red Hat 5 U4 x86/x64; SUSE 11 x86/x64; and Mac Snow Leopard 10.6.
-- Backup support and restore support for Microsoft Exchange 2010, using VSS (Volume Shadow Copy Service) Writers integration, and for Microsoft SQL Server 2008 SP1, for Microsoft SharePoint 2007 SP2, and for Lotus Domino/Notes.
-- Improved backups of VMware environments at the virtual machine level, allowing for quick recovery of an entire virtual machine. "We can now back up the VMDK image, and can restore to alternate servers and alternate virtual machines," according to Walzer. This, combined with traditional file-level backups, ensures that virtual environments are fully protected.
- A new version of the backup application intended for use on machines not on the network where the server backup exists, which uses less machine resources (for less impact on the system's overall performance).
Version 10.0 of Backup My Info! is available now; pricing, as with the prior version, is based on factors including the amount of compressed storage, and what 'tier' (online, nearline, offline) the storage is.
