De-Dupe Streamlines Backup

NEW YORK, May 2, 2006 – Backup is all about efficiency, not flash. So it's no surprise that the key to better backup lies in the relatively hidden area of de-duplication and compression techniques. Vendors of these products say they can provide backup more cheaply than tape or even virtual tape vendors can.

This month's Byte and Switch Insider (www.byteandswitch.com/insider) report, entitled Data De-Duplication: Storage Networking Bust-Up, covers the latest developments in this field, which cuts the amount of data being backed up or replicated, thereby saving on time, storage capacity, and WAN bandwidth utilization.

The key to de-duplication is to transmit only data that has changed since the last backup. This contrasts with the traditional model of backing up all of the data from every site on a weekly or daily basis – a tack that is no longer cost-effective or efficient for many organizations desperate to cut down the amount of information being stored. What's more, de-duplication products can eliminate operational complexities surrounding today's backup methods.

"Users themselves can never be trusted to clean up their own file mess, so the task inevitably has to be done by a more trusted element," says Martin Courtney, the author of the report. "Automated de-duplication solutions are as good a policeman as any currently available."
