Intel's annual report revealed that the company was successfully hacked this past January, around the same time as the Chinese Google hacks were grabbing all the headlines. The Intel hacks were cited in the company's annual report, and not much more than that. No word from the company on how serious the incursions were, or how wide-ranging. Admission that the company's systems had been breached was evidently required by regulatory compliance.

Among the ambiguities is whether the Intel breach was related to the Google Aurora intrusion.

Probably it wasn't -- probably the Intel hack was another in the rapidly growing number of targeted attacks aimed at leading companies.

Not sure whether that's a comfort or not, but it's a fact of life, as witness Microsoft's Steve Ballmer's comment in minimizing the Google intrusions :"We're attacked every day from all parts of the world and I think everybody else is too."
