CUPERTINO, Calif. -- Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC) today announced that The Mount Sinai Medical Center (NYSE: PNW) has selected Vontu Data Loss Prevention 8 from Symantec (Nasdaq:SYMC) to protect Electronic Personal Healthcare Information (EPHI) and other confidential data, as well as enable compliance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).

Because The Mount Sinai Medical Center encompasses both The Mount Sinai Hospital and Mount Sinai School of Medicine, the organization's data protection requirements are complex. The information security team must enable the collaborative information sharing that is essential to medical research, while at the same time enforcing data privacy policies appropriate to patient care in accordance with HIPAA.

Mount Sinai has licensed Vontu Endpoint Discover and Prevent to discover confidential data on desktops and laptops as well as prevent such data from being downloaded to endpoint systems or copied to USB drives or other removal devices. The Vontu solution is designed to enable organizations to accurately identify violations and automatically enforce policies by group.

"To effectively secure information in our complex environment, we must apply different policies to different groups," said Jack Nelson, Chief Information Officer, The Mount Sinai Medical Center. "By addressing the problem at the data level rather than simply focusing on device control, Vontu Data Loss Prevention from Symantec enables us to take a platform approach to multiple risk areas on endpoint systems throughout our enterprise."
