Untangle Offers Free Open Source Security

Untangle's new open source security gateway aims to free small and midsized businesses from dedicated security machines -- and to do so for free.Tackling Web filtering, spam and anti-virus defenses, Untangle's security gateway also tackles the dedicated hardware requirement imposed by many security appliances.

"Appliances are expensive, carry additional upfront costs and require configuration expertise," says Dirk Morris, the company's chief technical officer. "We wanted to leverage our open source expertise to provide small business with a pre-configured downloadable solution that runs on any XP machine with a gig of ram."

The just-released product offers a variety of configuration options and can be run either on a dedicated server or on a PC (that, according to Untangle, can continue to perform other functions.)

While the free version provides basic anti-virus, spam, Web filtering and other gateway defense, the professional version upgrades you to Kaspersky anti-vrus, as well as including live tech support.

Untangle professional is priced per number of users; the company also offers a la carte subscriptions to technical support and other features.

Untangle can be downloaded here and, at first, early glance looks to be well worth examining (the price is certainly right) especially for small (under 25 seats) networks.
