CAMPBELL, Calif. -- Barracuda Networks, Inc., a leading provider of network security solutions, today announced the Barracuda Message Archiver, an integrated hardware and software solution that enables organizations to preserve and index all emails to achieve legal and regulatory compliance needs while making more efficient use of storage technology inside the IT organization. In addition, the Barracuda Message Archiver offers greater ease of use and administration, enabling deployment in less than 60 minutes.

“Recent changes in both the legal and regulatory environments have dramatically broadened the need to retain email messages for future search and retrieval to even smaller organizations,” said Stephen Pao, vice president of product management for Barracuda Networks. “At the same time, managing continuously growing email storage requirements has grown even more complex. The Barracuda Message Archiver combines ease of deployment with comprehensive archiving capabilities, fast and easy search and retrieval mechanisms and intelligent storage management all at a price that is affordable for organizations of any size.”

Comprehensive Email Archiving

The Barracuda Message Archiver helps organizations of all sizes with a complete set of message archiving features designed with both compliance and storage efficiency in mind. Features include:

  • Capture of all new email. By integrating with the built-in journaling capabilities of email servers, including Microsoft Exchange, the Barracuda Message Archiver can capture inbound, outbound, and internal emails. For standards-based email servers that do not support journaling, the Barracuda Message Archiver can also capture email by acting as an SMTP relay between the email client and email server.

  • Import of historical email. The Barracuda Message Archiver supports import of existing email archive files, including Microsoft Outlook PST files, as well as the ability to import email from existing email servers through protocols such as MAPI, IMAP, and POP3.

  • Indexed Search and Retrieval. Using a thorough list of all message components, emails are fully indexed by message content and attachments with the option to add tags for customized searches. Auditors or end users can perform quick full-text searches based on tags or message content. Emails can then be exported or forwarded back to the users’ inbox.

  • Efficient Message Storage. The Barracuda Message Archiver includes a built-in storage array and allows organizations to expand to external storage arrays through industry standard protocols, such as NFS and CIFS. This storage flexibility allows organizations to move emails from costly, transaction-based storage required for production email servers to less expensive storage options. The Barracuda Message Archiver intelligently removes duplicate emails or attachments from a message thread, ensuring only one copy is compressed before storing it in a file system to maximize storage capacity.

Ensuring Support for Regulation Compliance

Enforcing corporate policy, compliance regulations and litigation requests are a growing aspect of a system administrator’s duties, requiring email retention, retrieval of related messages and delivery of all relevant communications.

“Most organizations rely on email as a primary method of business communication, yet many of those same organizations are operating without an email archiving solution in place,” said Pao. “The reality is that any organization that does not implement a strong email archiving solution faces a potentially astronomical hit both financially and in terms of resources if ever called upon to provide copies of email that they cannot access quickly. The Barracuda Message Archiver provides our customers with the tools they need to quickly sort through and access email when needed.”
