Russian Authorities Make Arrests In Wake Of Central Bank Cyberattack
Arrests in the $19-million theft were made in a joint operation by FSB and Interior Ministry, says central bank official.
A large number of suspects have been arrested by Russian authorities for the May cyberheist at its central bank involving $19 million, reports Reuters. Bank official Artyom Sychyov said the arrests were made in a joint operation by the Federal Security Service (FSB) and Interior Ministry for the cyberattacks on third-party accounts.
FSB, meanwhile, said around 50 suspects were detained on June 1 for involvement in the cybertheft of 1.7 billion rubles.
The central bank acknowledged the attack in a recent financial stability report, stating hackers attempted to steal 2.87 billion rubles - of which authorities recovered 1.67 billion. The official behind the report was later transferred to another department. It is not clear whether the two incidents are linked.
