US Think Tanks Involved In Russia Research Allegedly Hacked
Russia-backed DNC hacker COZY BEAR behind these spearphish attacks on individuals and organizations, says CrowdStrike.
Russia-backed hacking group COZY BEAR is suspected of having last week attacked networks of several US think tanks involved in Russia research, reports Defense One. CrowdStrike, which provides cybersecurity for these organizations, says it discovered the spearphish attacks on its clients and timely action thwarted attempts to steal information.
The cybersecurity firm believes the hackers tried to access details from those who work for these think tanks “to look at their communications with government officials to see if they may have some plundered information that’s been shared with them, or use them as a way to target government.”
COZY BEAR, also known as APT29, is suspected to be linked to the Russian Federal Security Service and, along with FANCY BEAR, is alleged to have been behind the recent hacks on Democratic National Committee.
