The FBI reportedly will alert the White House this week that it doesn't have sufficient knowledge of the technical details of the technique that helped it crack the iPhone used by the San Bernardino shooter.
FBI director James B. Comey reportedly has ruled out undertaking a government review on the possible disclosure of the vulnerability.
The agency paid professional hackers a fee of over $1 million to unlock the phone owned by shooter Syed Rizwan Farook after Apple refused to help the agency with a hack of the phone. Officials reportedly said the arrangement did not include disclosing to the FBI the software flaws that were used.
The FBI now argues that because it didn't have access to those details, it has little knowledge of how the hack works.
Apple has said it will not demand that the vulnerability be revealed.
