The financial services, healthcare/pharmaceuticals, and technology/software industries are the biggest users of encryption, according to the Encryption Application Trends Survey recently conducted by the Ponemon Institute and sponsored by Thales Security.

The survey of over 5,000 professionals showed that "extensive" use of encryption jumped by 7% last year, bringing the full number to 41%.

The most mature encryption strategies, according to the report, deploy hardware security modules (HSMs) in tandem with SSL/TLS, database encryption, and application-level encryption. Organizations using HSMs reported lower levels of "key management pain," according to the survey report.
